Eventually it happens.  You forget your password, or you are worried your email password may be compromised.   Windows Live (like any great application) provides a way to reset your password so you can continue to stay in touch with friends and family.      (download the PDF version)

Step # 1 – Go to http://login.live.com/

You will see this screen. Notice we don’t see a link for “Reset Password”. Go to Step #2.

Step #2 – Click the link “Sign in with a different Windows Live ID” on the right hand side just under your hotmail account name. (go to step #3)

Step #3 – Now, click on the “Forgot your password?” link

The right-hand side of the screen changes and the link appears. (Go to Step #4)

Step #4 – Enter in your eMail address and the CAPTCHA code then click “Continue”

NOTE¹ – If you are not sure what the CAPTCHA Code is you may

Click the “New” link to generate a new CAPTCHA Code.

NOTE² – To hear the CAPTCHA characters (letters) click the Audio Link.

NOTE³ – If an incorrect CAPTCHA code is entered the screen will look like the image below…

Step #5 – Choose your Reset Method

The next screen presents you with a choice between two links. Click on your preferred method.

5a. Send yourself a password reset email message

5b. Provide account information and answer your secret question.

5a1. Click the Radio button for “Send an eMail message to my alternate…”

5a2. Click the “Send Message” button

5a3. Check your eMail and follow instructions

5a4. Email from “Windows Live Team”

5a5. Verify your Windows Live Hotmail account

Enter in your Hotmail account and click “Continue”

5a6. Go to Step 5b2 below – You should see the “Create New Password” screen.

5b – Provide account information and answer

your secret question.

5b1. Fill in the blanks and click “Continue”

5b2. If you entered the correct account information, you should see the  “Create New Password” screen. Input a strong password, and click continue.

Note – A strong password contains letters, numbers and one special character.

Note – The new password must be different than your previous password.

5b3. Click the “Done” button and you will be taken back to http://login.live.com

5b4. Done! Now, try to sign in with your new password.
